With the tangent delta measurement, the current flow is measured in two directions: on the one hand, the intended direction, which follows the route of the conductor, and on the other hand, through the surrounding conductor insulation to the outside. The better or higher quality the insulation, the smaller the latter current flow.
The tangent delta measurement is an effective method for determining the condition of the insulation system and further operational reliability. The directions of flow are represented by two linked vectors in a vector diagram; one in the operating direction following the route of the conductor and the other through the insulation to the outside. This results in the "apparent current vector", which arises from the vectorial addition of the two components.

Performing the measurement

Five measuring points are recorded and evaluated during the measurement. The measurement is started at one fifth of the rated voltage, which represents the maximum value of the electrical voltage in normal operation. The measured voltage is increased each time by one fifth until the full rated voltage has been reached.
On the basis of these measurements a decision can be made as to whether actions such as repairs or optimizations to the insulation are required and what these should be.
